3-Tab Asphalt Shingles:
Many simply refer to these as “3-tabs” due to the fact each 36” full tab has three 12” individual tabs to create one full shingle. Really, that’s it. These shingles have a flat appearance with minimal color variations on in color. They are the most economical shingle in the marketplace being they typically only withstand winds upwards of 65mph, do not offer a lot of vibrance compared to architectural and designer shingles, and offer the shortest warranties compared to other shingle types. This shingle is typically used on new construction and multi-family construction such as apartments when price point is a factor. Not many roofing replacements utilize the 3-tab shingle any longer due to the cost difference being only slight compared to the architectural shingles. However, they are still available should the consumer feel it is the best product for present needs.
Architectural Shingles:
Also known as “laminated or dimensional shingles.” These are known to be the highest quality roofing shingle made. They are composed of heavy fiberglass as a mat base and they have ceramic granules that are embedded in the asphalt allowing for both durability, better water-resistance, and look much better than the traditional 3-tab asphalt shingle. This type of shingles are marketed as 30-year, 50-year, and/or Lifetime Shingles by all major manufacturers.
